Winter Activities in Tromsø

Magical Northern Lights Chase

We pick you up in Tromsø and take you by bus on a chase for the magical Northern lights. With good local knowledge we will find the best area for the lights and good scenery for your pictures. To find a clear sky we will drive where we have to, even to inner Troms if needed. During the evening your guide will tell you interesting information about the Northern lights, both the science and the folklore. We will also show you how to adjust your camera settings for pictures of the northern lights, and we will take pictures of you with the lights for you to take home to show your family and friends. (Available for download in original size from our Flickr account). Occasionally the chance of a clear sky is low, and in that case, we will advise you to reschedule for the following day without additional cost.

Guided Snowshoeing on Tromsø Island

Join us for a short snow-shoeing trip in easy terrain. This tour is designed for people with little experience and for those who have never tried snowshoeing. It is also perfect for families with kids from 8 years and older. After a short 10-minute drive to the top of the Tromsø island, we first learn how to use snowshoes and then we start walking into the forest. Our guide will lead you through flat and slightly hilly terrain. We stop several times during the walk for photos and to provide you with information about our beautiful city and Arctic environment. The area is wonderfully scenic with birch and spruce forests and providing the opportunity to enjoy the incredible views of the surrounding island landscapes. We also stop for a longer break where we serve lefse (a delicious local snack) and a hot drink to warm up. As the weather can change rapidly in Northern Norway to join this tour it is obligatory to wear warm and windproof clothes and winter boots above ankle. Winter clothes and boots are not included in the price of the tour, but can be rented separately at our rental centre upon prior arrangement.
From mid-February onward the sun can be surprisingly strong, especially because of the reflecting snow, so we recommend you also bring sunglasses and sun cream with you.

You will at first see Camp Tamok on your way out in the wild. The trails you follow have a total distance from 8 km to 15 km depending on weather and safety conditions. The area where you lead the sled is totally uninhabited, with a landscape of mountains and forest. Out in the wilderness, these dogs are in their right environment. You will drive in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each sled, with opportunity to witch places half way. After the adventure, you will return to Camp Tamok and a hot meal will be served in our heated lavvu (Sami herdsmen’s tent).

Reindeer sledding is the oldest form of transport in the north, and an ancient part of Sami culture. You will be driving in pairs, with one sled for each reindeer. People of all ages can participate on this very “soft” adventure. This cultural adventure includes trying lasso-throwing, the way the Sami people still today catch their reindeers when they are rounded up for marking or slaughter. Also, you will learn about Sami culture and history. To conclude this excursion, you will be served a hot meal. Morning trips give you an amazing view of the wild mountains in the area, and evening trips in the period November – March will give you a good chance to experience the Northern Lights.

Snowmobile Adventure at Camp Tamok

You need no previous skills to drive a snowmobile, all you need is normal physical condition. We begin with a thorough safety introduction. The trail has a distance of 15 km each way, 30 km in total. The starting point is at 250 m above sea level, and the guide brings you up to 875 m. You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each snowmobile, with opportunity to switch places during the trip. Due to the dramatic topography, a reduced speed is held during parts of the tour. The top point of the trail is a frozen lake, where you can speed up. Enjoy the unique atmosphere as we serve an Arctic Tapas dinner with fresh and local ingredients, based on traditional dishes with a modern twist. We will serve you with a five-course meal (3 cold dishes, 1 heated meal and desert), as we search for the northern lights. Prepare for a silent and tasty cruise.

Silent Whale Watching

A unique perspective on the feeding frenzy of Humpbacks and Orcas that come to Troms in the winter. We use a hybrid engine to reach the whale’s feeding grounds at Skjervøy in less than 3 hours and in time to enjoy the hours of daylight. You can enjoy fresh pastries and coffee in the comfortable salons as you take in the spectacular Arctic morning light, sailing past snow-covered landscapes, the Lyngen Alps, islands, fjords and fishing villages. There is a good chance of spotting white tailed eagles, Europe’s largest bird of prey, and porpoises along the way. A professional guide will give you an in-depth lecture about marine life during the trip. As we near the whales, the silent electric engine allows us to get close to these majestic animals without disturbing them. The underwater drone and hydrophone will also be able to capture the whales communicating as they cooperate to hunt the herring in the deep narrow fjords. Please note that whales are wild animals, and constantly on the move. We can guarantee that we will do our best in finding them but cannot guarantee sightings. If the whales are far away, we need to use our diesel engines for the transfer. On arrival to the whale site we cruise in silent electric mode.
