Snowshoe Hike

Snowshoe hiking is an excellent way of experiencing the winter landscape in Abisko National Park. You are sure to have a fabulously different experience. On snowshoes you move easily over pristine snow. Variations in our mountain terrain, from birch tree forest to wideopen white expanses of sunlist snow make an impact on both body and soul. Snowshoeing equipment is easy to use and, as soon as we have put our snowshoes on, we are off. We tread lightly across snowcovered ground towards an opening glade in a birchwood forest. Suddenly mountain scenery becomes visible from a completely new perspective: A long valley framed by beautiful mountain tops, clothed in white. We pause for a while to take in the view. Continuing onwards we may change direction to follow the tracks of wild animals in the park. After we have enjoyed a light snack and a hot beverage (a classic Swedish “fika”) we make our way back to the station.

Availability: Wednesdays and Sundays

Times: 10:00-13:00

Includes: Guide, snowshoes/sticks, hot beverage

Nordic Cross Country Skiing

Try out skiing on sparkling cold mid-winter snow or spring’s very first snow crust, whilst we help you discover Abisko National Park. It is made clear that there are wild animals as our skis cross their tracks. We get a feeling for snow in varying terrain, surrounded by beautiful views. We familiarize ourselves with ski gear and learn basic techniques before we start skiing. Newly learned skills are soon put to the test as we skate-ski up steep slopes, glide across frozen lakes and keep our balance skiing downhill. The guide point out some favourite spots and talks about the surroundings, Sami culture and wildlife as we ski back to the station.

Availability: Monday – Friday

Times: 10:00-13:00

Includes: Guide, skiing gear, warm beverage

Northern Lights Hike

Looking for, and at, Northern Lights is best done on foot under open skies. Hiking around Abisko provides you with an opportunity to enjoy the scenery for as long as possible, giving you mind-blowing memories. Filled with expectancy, we get ready to experience a genuine mission: spotting the night’s best Northern Lights. Using only hand-held oil lamps we go out into the dark polar night, stopping at places in the Abisko National Park that are known to give brilliant views of the lights. During the hike you learn more about this heavenly phenomenon. The route taken, downstream along Abisko River through mountain birch forests to Torneträsk, is a classic one. Have your camera ready for sudden burst of coloured light dancing in the sky. We round off in front of a warm fire, exchanging views and discussing impressions of our night-time adventure.

Availability: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Times: 19:00-23:00

Includes: Guide, coffee and dried reindeer meat
