Day 01: Reykjavik
Upon arrival in Keflavik airport, your bus and local guide take you on a sightseeing tour through Reykjavik and you will see the most famous attractions such as the presidential residence in Bessastaðir, Höfði house where the important meeting between US president Ronald Reagan and general secretary Mikhail Gorbachev of the former USSR took place in 1986. You will also visit the church Hallgrimskirkja and the Old Town, where the Icelandic Parliament and the City Hall is located.

Day 02: Golden Circle
Start with the highlights of Iceland along the Golden Circle: the Thingvellir National Park is where the first Parliament was held. Here we take an easy walk between the European and American continental plates. Observe how the geyser Strokkur shoots up in regular intervals and continue to the “golden waterfall” Gullfoss, From here you leave the common route behind to venture up into the highlands, getting up close to Iceland’s second largest glacier Langjökull.

Day 03: Thorsmörk
You pass the waterfall Seljalandsfoss and leave the paved roads behind to venture into the highland, driving through black deserts and fording rivers. Between three glaciers and jagged mountain ridges, you will be surprised to find the lush oasis of Thorsmörk, a nature reserve cut through by roaring glacier rivers. Here there are a selection of hiking trails for you to get close to Icelandic nature. Stay overnight in the local mountain hut and experience the nightly stillness of the wild highlands up close. Please note the huts are shared accommodation and your tour guide will appreciate your help in preparing the evening meal.

Day 04: Laki Volcano
Cross the black sandy plains of the south shore until you stop near the town Kirkjubaejarklaustur. A short hike will bring you to the magnificient canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur. A little further on, you leave the ring road to head inland for a fascinating hike up on top of Laki volcano. The devastating Laki eruption 1783 was the biggest Iceland has ever seen since first settlement, sweeping poisonous clouds over to Europe and affecting the global climate.

Day 05: Skaftafell National Park
At the foot of the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, Skaftafell national park boasts Iceland’s highest mountain peak, fascinating basalt waterfalls and an accessible glacier tounge – our aim for today! Dive into the ice caves and tunnels and learn how to use crampons to walk on Svínafellsjökull glacier. In the afternoon you have time for a boat tour in the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón, where the glacier calves and icebergs float into the open sea (optional).

Day 06: South shore & Hengill region
Journey back along the south coast, stopping to walk along the black beaches of Vík and spotting puffins at Dyrhólaey cliff. In the afternoon you will climb down into the lava caves around Hengill volcano, marvel at bubbling mud pools and relax in a natural hot spring.

Day 07: Reykjanes & departure
Past the desolate lava landscape of Reykjanes, dotted with many volcanic craters, the circle of your journey closes again at Keflavik airport. Maybe you have time for a healing dip into the Blue Lagoon before departure? (optional)
