A self-drive tour where time is your own to experience this Authentic North itinerary. You will start and end in Tromsø – the arctic capital combined with the North Cape in winter, a nature paradise in Karasjok, continue to Finish Lapland and overnight in traditional log cabins. This itinerary includes the best what Norway and Finland have to offer.

Day 1: Tromsø, the arctic capital

Arrival in Tromsø where you pick-up your rental car to drive to the city center. After your arrival you may wish to explore this Arctic city known as “Paris of the North”. Tromsø is the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle and is home to the world’s northernmost university, brewery and cathedral. Start your journey up North with the first stop in Alta.

Day 2: Alta – Honningsvåg

Breakfast at the hotel and departure according to your own itinerary. Today you can take your time to explore the nice city of Alta, or to add some activities to your itinerary. Please ask us for suggestions or inspiration.

Day 3: Snowmobile Safari to the North Cape

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will join an excursion by snowmobile to mainland Europe’s most northern point, the North Cape. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically 300 metres from the sea, and you gaze out with nothing but water between you and the frozen wastes surrounding the North Pole.

Day 4: Honningsvåg – Karasjok

Breakfast at the hotel and departure. Today you will drive south to the area known as the capital of the Sami, Karasjok. Your day is at leisure to discover Karasjok. Tonight, you will stay at Engholm’s Husky Lodge situated next to Karasjohka river, 6 km outside of Karasjok. The designed log houses were built by Sven – the owner himself – and have a special charm. Sven has made all the interior furnishing and decoration in order to create a unique and personal atmosphere in each house. Enjoy the wood heated sauna and the very popular outdoor hot tub (not included).
Dinner and overnight in the cosy and authentic Engholm’s Husky Lodge in your own private cabin with private bathroom. (2 nights)

Day 5: Karasjok – dog sledding

Breakfast at the lodge and time for one of the tour’s highlights! Drive your “own” dog team during this magical daytrip. This excursion includes a barbeque lunch over open fire. The tour goes far off the beaten track and provides an interesting and unique dog sledding experience. Sven’s farm consists of 40-50 highly trained sled dogs for long-distance racing and tours. The tour will last approximately four hours and the actual ride will be about one hour. Enjoy the wood heated sauna and the very popular outdoor hot tub (not included).

Day 6: Karasjok – Saariselkä

Breakfast at the lodge. Today you will leave Norway and enter Finland. Your accommodation for the next two nights will be at Kakslauttanen. Overnight in traditional log cabins with your own fireplace and sauna, the snow and igloo village also offers an opportunity for guests to overnight in ice or glass igloos (supplementary prices available on request). At Kakslauttanen you can enjoy a variety of winter activities, further information available.

Day 7: Saariselkä – Reindeer Safari

Breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast enjoy a two hours reindeer safari. Transfer by private vehicle from the hotel to the safari office. At the safari office you will receive full equipment, including thermal suit, boots, socks, gloves, balaclava and helmet. After several photo opportunities with reindeer it’s time to sit comfortably in the sledge under warm blankets and head into the wilderness. The pace is calm and you can relax, breath in the fresh air and listen to the soundscape of the arctic wilderness. After the ride you enter to a traditional reindeer herder’s shelter and home “kota” to enjoy coffee prepared on open fire and a Finnish treat. You will also learn about the fascinating nature and culture of the region. This safari provides an everlasting memory of true excitement in Finnish Lapland!       

Day 8: Saariselkä – Rovaniemi

Breakfast at the hotel and drive to the capital of Finish Lapland – Rovaniemi. Rovaniemi is the “official” home of Santa Claus and here you will find Santa’s village, with a post office to send your letters to Santa himself. Rovaniemi is also a city offering a variety of restaurants and shopping possibilities. All your winter wishes can become reality in Rovaniemi.

Day 9: Rovaniemi – Muonio

Breakfast at the hotel. Afterwards you will head back North to Muonio. Harriniva is located in Western-Lapland, next to the Muonio River. Experience endless possibilities for different activities.

Day 10: Muonio

After breakfast, your day is at leisure to simply enjoy your surroundings or book an activity as per your personal preference (please ask us for an activity list with applicable prices).

Day 11: Muonio – Tromsø

Breakfast at the hotel. Then you will leave Finland behind and travel back to Norway and the capital arctic city of Tromsø. We hope that you enjoyed all the highlights and  accommodation in this itinerary.

Breakfast at the hotel and self-drive to the airport, return your rental vehicle and departure according to your own itinerary.
